SAWM India Commitment to PSEA

South Asian Women in Media (SAWM) is a voluntary association of only women journalists from across eight countries of South Asia. SAWM India is the Indian chapter of SAWM. SAWM India is a Public Service Trust.

SAWM India does not tolerate any form of sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as bullying and a range of non-sexual abuse of power perpetrated by SAWM members or office bearers against any individual, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, disability, religion or ethnic origin.

SAWM India commits to do all the needful for preventing programmes having any negative effects to such as Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by members, or office bearers, or employees, or contractors, against any associates.

SAWM India takes seriously all the complaints and concerns about sexual exploitation and abuse and it initiates rigorous investigation of complaints that indicates a possible violation of this policy, under SAWM Ethical Guidelines.

Core Principles

  1. Sexual exploitation and abuse by SAWM members and related personnel constitute acts of gross misconduct and are therefore grounds for disciplinary actions and/or termination of membership.
  2. Sexual activity with children (persons under the age of 18) is prohibited regardless of the age of
    majority. or age of consent locally. Mistaken belief regarding the age of a child is not a defense and in no way shall ignorance of the age of the person be accepted as a justification.
  3. Exchange of money, employment, goods, or services for sex, including sexual favors or other forms
    of humiliating, degrading or exploitative behavior is prohibited.
  4. Where SAWM India employee and related personnel develops concerns or suspicions regarding sexual abuse or by a fellow worker, whether the individual works for SAWM India or for other organization, partners,suppliers or other related stakeholders, he or she must report such concerns through the means and tools to the SAWM India President, and General Secretary.
  5. All SAWM India members or employees, are obliged to create and maintain an environment that prevent sexual exploitation and abuse, and promotes the implementation of the ethical code of journalistic standards that all journalists must abide.

Commitments

SAWM as an association of women media professionals—in its vision statement—was created to safeguard the rights of all rights of women and marginalised groups across South Asia. Therefore, SAWM India is dedicated to fulfilling the core principals under the UNSCR Resolution 13.25 and Supreme Court of India’s Vishaka guidelines promulgated in 1997 and superseded thereafter in 2013 Women in the Workplace (Prevention Prohibition) Act.

SAWM India is bound to provide an intimidation free zone to all members as well as employees or contractors

  • Officer Bearers are guided by the UN guidelines on women and children.
  • Our code of ethics is published on the website https://sawmsisters.com and is attached as a pledge to all members.
  • SAWM India ensures that all employees or contractors know to whom they should report sexual misbehavior and what sort of assistance they can expect to receive.

SAWM India is committed to ensure that all third parties, including partners and suppliers, are committed to respect the principles in the SEA policy.

Email to any of the ICC members with your complaint. Your communication will be confidential.

Reporting Form: Suggested Content of a Written Complaint

  • – Name and Profile of the Complainant
  • – Name and Profile of the Perpetrator (Respondent)
  • – Working relationship between Complainant and Respondent
  • – Incidents(s) with place, date and time
  • – Consequence(s) of sexual harassment on the Complainant, at work and personal level
  • – Any other relevant information
